We make a holiday too

Finally arrived in the south of Portugal, we made the, what many other people do here also: Holiday! The first day included a beautiful dinner with the family Lachaise from Bavaria was a great introduction.

So it should go. We splurged for two days in very luxurious (and expensive) Marina in Lagos, to the radar problem to finally get a grip. In addition, other friends had announced their. Even at noon made the MENTOR and the CAYLUNA in Lagos their lines fixed. For the evening we reserved this time a table for thirteen people in one of the restaurants on the harbor promenade. The round was getting bigger and funnier. After the dishes were eaten empty and the first have slowly withdrawn from the round on the boats, but we had not had enough and went to five more on the JOY OF LIFE, around the dinner there damp-merry (naturally without the small Alia) to end. On Thursday evening our port wine inventories had for the first time "believe in it". So we invited to a private wine tasting and spent again a fun evening with Jana and Lars on the JOY OF LIFE. Good, that the port for dinghy driver no alcohol checks are carried out. That would certainly become scarce.

On Friday there was still no news of our radar, that was now before at RAYMARINE in Lisbon. Then over the weekend, no further progress was expected, we decided, to put us at anchor off the beach of Lagos. But before we visited the city yet a visit. After four months here was a chance, to be able to thoroughly enjoy German bread and cakes again, because there was a German Bakery. Despite the city map we needed but some time, until we had circled and discovered. But then we could Bavarian apple strudel, Not escape spelled wholemeal bread and Black Forest gateau. Loading hard it went back from our SUMMER. Now we have to endure at least a week at anchor, ohne zu verhungern 🙂

We found out in front of the beach a nice place to anchor. Our SUMMER rocked despite calm sea, although quite strongly from one side to the other, as we turned the flow always transverse to swell. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the peace and tranquility. We spent the evening again on the JOY OF LIFE and discussed about God and the world. The evenings together we will certainly miss her very much, when the three will soon adopt before your trip across the Atlantic to the Caribbean from us. So we use but still every opportunity.

On Saturday, yet the MENTOR joined us and in the afternoon we took the dinghy clear about the trip to the caves before Lagos. In the city we have repeatedly seen various agencies, offered these trips, but we wanted better without "guide" go on the road.

For dinner we had arranged to meet in the connector on the JOY OF LIFE (as always :-)) with a pretty casual menu-planning: Everyone brings dinner with, which he had planned for his ship and at the end we had a decent buffet on the table. So we ate together very delicious and varied and the evening was once again a resounding success. We had particular fun with the little "Baby Animal" Alia, das unter dem Tisch hauste und uns reihum mit gekonntem „Füße kitzeln“ zum Lachen brachte 🙂

Sunday we spent for a change alone. The MENTOR made their way eastwards. We took the dinghy again to Lagos, a little stroll and drink coffee. Of which could prevent us from not even the rain, the quite violent came from heaven in between. Because as soon as he came, as fast as he disappeared again and the sun made a few minutes later the puddles disappear.

Continuing south – However :-)

This week began surprisingly early for our conditions. Promptly at eight thirty, exactly to the opening of the pivoting footbridge, we had the SUMMER ready and cast off cast. The sun was somehow not yet fully awake, because they had not yet been able to enforce against the dense fog over the water. The entire deck was covered with a thick layer of morning dew. Let's see, how it would develop.

We again enjoyed the beautiful view of Lisbon, as we drove on the Tego with water running off with engine power towards the sea.

XKH_6657

Already in the mouth we sat in the dense fog and were not pleased, that we had our radar problem apparently still not solved. Again and again the signal disappeared from the screen and now we only had an average maturity of less than one minute, before the screen went black again. Lately even funny colored circles were added (mostly in pink). It was really "milking mice" for! Visibly irritated, Dietmar wrote an email to Raymarine and organized ourselves before a technician for our next port of Lagos.

Jointly we tried in increasingly dense fog, to sink even a "small" 100m tanker in the wake of Tegos. Aber er hatte Glück und konnte uns leider gerade noch so entkommen 🙂

At sea finally wind came up and the fog lifted quickly. The swell was running but transverse to the vessel and the SUMMER seemed to us like a bottle cork, rocking on the waves back and forth. Not bad, since the wave was not high, but somehow exhausting. As fears, the wind came right from the beginning and was not interested in further predicting, to turn toward the south west, so that we could finally set sail.

We chugged further south and the time passed this time rather viscous. All attempts to sail at least a bit, failed miserably. So we added ourselves to our fate and sold us the time reading, Eating and Sleeping. In the late afternoon we got a visit from a large Delphi School, which was launched to play. The three and four of them jumped at the same time often far from the water. Together we stood on the front of the bow and enjoyed the spectacle. This front was almost impossible to hear our engine. How beautiful and peaceful the world was without the useful "Annoying Dwarf", with his noise disturbed the peace under the dirt. To top it off we saw several times the blow of a whale, the vorbeizog close. What a beautiful experience.

XKH_6684

XKH_6739

The night began clear and beautiful. The full moon shone so bright, that the visibility was almost as good as the day. This time I had the first watch, I had slept quite a lot during the day. Uneventful the time drew unfortunately something like chewing gum. Only several flocks of birds circling the boat at night. Once decided two of the little guys but for a while on our solar panel to drive with. I was a bit worried about the two, the sat so close to the propeller of the wind generator, rotating at impressive speed. But everything went well and at some point I was again alone on deck.

XKH_6755

Against three clock in the morning, shortly after the changing of the guard, came back to very dense fog. In complete contrast to my relaxed Guard, Dietmars layer was really no fun. But he managed to, safely around the "Cabo de São Vicente" to maneuver us and all large and small fishing boats, unfortunately without AIS are in Portugal go more or less spacious avoid. Hairy it was only once as in ca. 70 Meters on the port side appeared a trawler trawls from the fog. No directed AIS no fog horn and only one headlight on the power. Dietmar was even able to clearly hear the individual voices of the fishermen, before the fishermen silently disappeared in the fog. When I crawled at eight-thirty back from my bunk was all over again and I had slept through everything. Dank meines lieben Ehemannes führe ich manchmal schon ein echtes Luxusleben 🙂

Our fuel gauge showed just over an hour since "EMPTY" (dust dry) an. In Lagos, we therefore first filled our tank with almost 300 Liters of diesel again, before we verholten the SUMMER in the harbor. Funnily enough, they accepted at the gas station only cash and American Express. A real challenge for us, because we wanted to fill up yes and no bank or ATM in sight.

After a directly subsequent, hearty breakfast ashore (good, that you almost anywhere you can pay by debit card) and a small nap we were back fit and enterprising. For the evening, in fact our first visit from Germany had announced. The Lachaise family spent their holidays in Portugal and watched our progress towards the south for several days. Now we sat with Michael, Silke & Philip together in a restaurant at the marina. Dietmar Michael had only last year told during a joint sales call in Austria about our plans today and we all sat together with us on the boat at the southern tip of Portugal. It really is incredible, but it worked :-)After the great night we look forward to seeing you again next year!

Too much of a good thing

On Sunday morning we went to second on the way, to explore the old town of Lisbon. The sun stayed fortunately not at the weather report and beamed from the sky. Without wind it was quickly very warm. We walked along the Tego direction Baxia, the old business district of Lisbon.

XKH_6563

But soon we realized, that Lisbon was a size too big for us. After manageable and rather cozy Porto, gave it everything in abundance: Too much traffic, too many people, too much noise and, unfortunately, a lot of dirt. Also, this city of millions was not explored on foot, the paths between the individual interesting corners were very long and led us into areas, were the very dilapidated and marked by poverty. Added to this was, that we both probably a little "city-tired" were. It was time for outdoors and deserted coves and beaches.

On the other hand, there were also very nice place with outdoor cafes, great old buildings and houses, narrow streets and wide, impressive streets and great parks. Nevertheless, we did not feel really comfortable. So we decided, us with the hop-on-and-off bus to provide at least a brief overview and left us almost two hours to the many attractions of Lisbon chauffeured. The Tour reconciled us back to the city and next year we will certainly again give Lisbon a chance.

XKH_6560

XKH_6591

In the harbor we decided with the SY MENTOR and JOY OF LIFE the next day to head south. Without stopping we wanted to escape the fickle wind on the Atlantic coasts and hop in the Algarve just relax along the coast, swim and anchor.

The culmination

The best thing you should really pick up until the end. After we had enjoyed Porto the last day on different ways - for example, the Old Town with art and culture or the great shopping in the harbor - we wanted today times extensively with the topic of port wine apart.

Waltraud and Wolfgang von der SY Methor had been previously explored various port wine cellars and selected the best ones for our visit. But first we went to a last Fotozession on the Douro River opposite the old town. Here, the port wine cellars (for promotional purposes of course) old or remanufactured barges are, which were previously used to transport Port wine barrels from the vineyards to the cellars in Porto. After this decorative motif was banned in countless variations to memory card, it was then seriously.

XKH_6236

Nicht Calem, Sandemann or Croft we wanted to visit, because the large wineries had shown aligned in the pre-selection rather impersonal and larger crowds of tourists. We made our way to the winery "Churchill". Set just above the waterfront was the building from the outside rather unimpressive. Inside, we were greeted very friendly but. As just one leadership had begun in French, we were allowed to taste the first port before the tour: a ten year old white port wine "Extra Dry". Das war schon mal das erste tolle Geschmackserlebnis 🙂

Then it was instructive. In the cellar we first learned about the history of the house Churchill and then something about Port wine in general. So the grapes are even today still read manually. And usually by women, which are the more emotional pickers and avoid damage to the grapes (No wonder the:-)?). Or did you know, that a port wine cask was always first a normal wine barrel (so for fifty years) and possibly can move up the career ladder even further, and then can be a Whiskey Barrel? Or, Port wines that can mature in the cask or in the bottle either? So we learned many things about Port wine and enjoyed a great and informative tour.

XKH_6276

XKH_6280

Then it was finally continue with the sample and the other two sampled wines were a real treat. So we pored over the map: What we should take? For decision-making we had then but still try another wine. After careful consideration emigrated different varieties of port wine in our backpacks. We treated ourselves to a very special highlight. A matured in the bottle vintage port wine of exceptional year Ganges 2011. At the moment he is too young, to enjoy it. But then when I officially pensionable age 67 Years have reached, sollte er optimal sein 🙂

XKH_6316

After we had packed all the valuable purchases, should it go by bike back to the port. Whether this means of transportation in our state was the optimal choice? We were pretty good mood. And after shopping we had a further glass of donated us to the completion port wine. Good, that we are not placed in a police control! We would have no excuses times us in Portuguese. Ultimately, however, we came quickly (especially Dietmar, the unrestrained down the mountain shot) and accident-free back to the boat and also the precious cargo safely stored already in the bilge. Let's see, wie lange sie dort bleibt 🙂

After a quickly prepared emergency portion of pasta with pesto we were just as fast fit. The rest of the evening we use for our travel arrangements. Even though the wind still can not see, we want to leave for Lisbon tomorrow. Maybe we can find it out there somewhere, yes you should not give up hope.

One for the Money :-)

Yesterday was a good start, but we had not been long enough. The Crossing of the Douro River by ferry was also easy on the second day. But this time we wanted to take the tram, the so-called "Electrica", be chauffeured in the city.

XKH_5885

XKH_5888

The journey began when boarding, because the trams were put into operation in the 50s for the first time and are only in the year 2005 been faithfully and painstakingly restored. The trip was also a great experience. It was very noisy, Not spring comfort available, slowly and drafty, because all the windows were fully opened. Somehow the time had simply stopped and the track might as well have somewhere in Cuba can be used. The German TÜV would certainly shut down the part, but the flair, which gave off the very neat and visually beautiful old piece of technology, was a treat even for non-technology savvy people. By the way, the women conductors were also very attractive phenomena, wie Dietmar immer wieder beiläufig erwähnte 🙂

XKH_5889

At the last stop we were herauskomplimentiert friendly from the conductress. Was Chef kam, surprised us very. The lady closed the seatback all the seats in no time at, and just went into the control booth at the other end of the car. The pantograph was previously but still manually to 180 Degree and rotated before the travel on the same track in the opposite direction could be continued. Made really great!

Porto is a city, The built right on the river bank of the Douro in the surrounding hills. With Electrica unfortunately we did not land on the highest point of the city, but somewhere quite close to the river. So we climbed down first in the old quarter "Ribeira" with the narrow streets and narrow houses.

XKH_5895

Once there, led every other way then unfortunately only used uphill, 🙂 egal in welche Richtung wir schauten. Heroic, we took the rise in attack. For almost 30 ° C already quite athletic performance. But in order not to let the efforts to very degenerate, we put in one of the inviting cafes for an overnight stay. Dietmar selected from the range as is often the largest piece, was to find. As we found, he had it then also much longer fun, as it was to him like a brick in the stomach.

XKH_5923

By the early afternoon we wandered back and forth across the streets and alleys. Then it was time, back to the harbor. For today's visit was announced. The SY MENTOR and the catamaran "Joy of Life" were on their way to Porto. Da wollten wir doch nicht zu spät kommen 🙂

So we were at this evening a really big round of ten sailors, who had decided, to go together in the village to eat. Like two days earlier, we sat in the quaint backyard and could infect us by the Portuguese joy of life. The wild confusion, in which the various grilled fish and marine mammalian game arrived with us, you just had to accept as typical of the country. Finally, everyone was full, even if not everyone had eaten the, what he had ordered. But no matter, it really was all delicious.

RIMG0698

RIMG0699

With the "Joy of Life" we now also had the family with a child in the round. The small Alia has just turned six years old. As Dietmar course was in his element. So the two of them painted harmoniously side by side in Alias coloring book funny "socket Animals" (Piggy), Fish and also the spider "Tekla" of Maya the Bee. Very convenient for me, for I know now exactly, what birthday gift I need to get back next week for Dietmar birthday. So cheap I'm probably never come off: A beautiful coloring book really seems to be exactly his thing. 🙂

Finally in Porto

Enough work, now it was really time, To discover Porto. After the morning was yet again like a computer problem on the Ganesha victim, we moved in the early afternoon then finally start. By ferry we wanted on the other side of the river and from there by bus to the old town.

Surprised we found, that Portuguese ferry dock are just as conspicuously as Spanish bus stops. And what of the strange, small boats, who were on the river road, should it really be the ferry? So we stood on the shore of the small fishing port and watched the river. Sometime actually took a Nutshell price on our site and suddenly we were no longer alone on the quay wall. The locals took determined price on a small floating dock full of fishing boats, inconspicuous We concurred and a short time later we were already rocked over to the other shore. The bus stop was subsequently really easy to find.

A spa package for our SUMMER

The last three days we were lazy, aber nur schreibfaul 🙂 Wie geplant wurde an unserer SUMMER fleißig gewerkelt. The most important point at all to the "To Do List": Repair of the radar.

Even right after breakfast Dietmar was traveling, to make the Raymarine technician arrest. Mit Ricardo, the customer service from the local yacht service, Dietmar had found a new friend quite to his taste. From the beginning, they understood each other perfectly and the conversations came from sticks on sticks. As a "Fast Blood Brothers" and good buddy share the two now everything, except wives, Cars, Mobile phones and computers. Since I've been lucky again.

As a result, many long conversations ultimately a comprehensive service package was agreed. As stated in the next two days, the craftsmen of various trades on the SUMMER in the truest sense of the word jack in the hand and Dietmar was as earlier as chief back in his element. Wednesday evening at last appeared the RAYMARINE technician, a very nice and above all experienced ship electronics. This could not be, as expected by Dietmar, pull directly into the mast. So a trouble! Although we were all so sure, that the problem was hiding up there in the radar antenna. And on top of that it would be very handy indeed been, because that part was still under warranty.

But as it turned out, we were all on the completely wrong track. The error was never performed during tests at the port. Therefore, we thought, it is up to the ship motion. Any motion-dependent problem in the antenna, if, as so often at sea, the radar resigned his commission. The fact that we were always connected in port with shore power, while we had tested, we had not taken into account.

So our SUMMER was separated from the "country-outlet" and Dietmar had the task, to consume as much electricity simultaneously, to test our batteries times through its paces. Soon ran beside water maker and boiler, Inverter, Autopilot uvm. even the brand new vacuum cleaner. Our Spanish web neighbor was visibly excited by the German purity delusion and examined as soon as the width.

XKH_5694

So were the two gentlemen out, that we had a power problem, because somewhere between the battery and went radar antenna 1 Lost volts. Once the on-board voltage under 12,3 Volt had fallen, arrived at the radar so only 11,3 Volts and the antenna increases from. Now had to be tested and measured in painstaking detailed work each cable and each contact point. It took two hours until they defeated "the leak" arrest made. A contact failure in the first year and a half old fuse panel was the cause. Not externally to identify and in more than 90% of all cases the cause of problems with the on-board electronics. Actually, no wonder, because the salty, moist and warm ocean air oxidizes the exposed contact surfaces and is therefore pure poison for the sensitive components. But as you had the error then found times, He was very easy to fix. A positive side effect was, that we have our ship again to know better and Dietmar got a valuable lesson in measurement technology and dealing with a voltmeter. This will certainly help us in the future very much.

XKH_5695

Now you just need the exercise test at sea. But this time, we are sure, das Radar-Problem ist Geschichte 🙂

Very pleased with the excellent service we treated our SUMMER still a wellness treatment. The superstructure waited for some time it, to be once again expertly polished and then sealed with hard wax. Even just thinking of the many corners and edges Dietmar got a bad mood, because that is exactly the Sisyphean task, he loves so very particular. Two days work at 32 ° C in the sun took the polisher to all corners and edges were processed thoroughly and our SUMMER shone again in new splendor. The poor man had to even put a wet towel on his bald head, so as not to burn up in the sun. I did not miss me, then personally bring the teak back into shape and scrub the remnants of polish with plenty of water and a sponge piece by piece. And to finish our machine also got an oil- missed and filter change. Thus was the "SUMMER wellness package" completely.

So were very quick, three days have passed, we had spent in the immediate vicinity of Porto, without seeing the city itself. We want to change tomorrow.

In the first row

XKH_5153

This morning we were very relaxed early on the go. At nine clock should start on the marketplace a very special spectacle. What exactly, the harbor master had not betrayed us. When we arrived, was the entire marketplace already completely crowded with onlookers as we and almost 300 Bombo drummers divided into ca. 20 Groups from different Portuguese cities in colorful costumes. Good, that the tasting of yesterday had remained without consequences, because with a thick head that would have been too much to bear :-)Before the town hall each group could present itself again with a solo performance in front of an enthusiastic audience - and this seems the drummers really are in the blood. The only risk: Tinnitus-risk! XKH_5223

At the end of our battered ears got a little relaxation, because the orchestra of Viana do Castelo suggested much quieter and very melodic tones of. XKH_5276

Now we had a breakfast worthy of us honestly. Already on the way to us was a particularly inviting cafe caught your eye. It really was everything, what the heart desired. And also the amount of the bill at the end was nothing to be desired. XKH_5327

Above Viana do Castelo on Monte Santa Luzia is the same pilgrimage churches to see from a distance. Already because of the great foresight, we did not want to leave unvisited this location. But the athletic 670 To climb stages of the pilgrimage, attracted us in the afternoon not really. Beautiful, that there was an alternative for lazy tourists like us another cable car. On the way back to the port we received still drive a bit through the streets, but somehow we had enough for today "Fiesta".

So we dressed for dinner in the restaurant SUMMER back. There you had are a special delicacy on the menu for tonight: „Hornhecht, fangfrisch“ 😉

Before meal it was on the waiting dock or another person. A berth was available between the SY Ganesha and our SUMMER. This had taken a Belgian yacht targeted. Good, that we saw it coming. Dietmar was waiting at the dock, to accept the linen. I had remained on board, because the pike stewed already in the pan. But Curious, I went on deck but, a little port cinema is always nice. Just in time I was able to prevent, that our anchor underwent a permanent bond with the Belgian sea-railing, which would probably have drawn the short straw. Dietmar tried under the, Bug in der Yacht (complete ohne Fender) possible without damage to maneuver past the web. The two had probably underestimated the strong current of the river. We were able to avoid a worse fate for both the fourth Belgian yacht as well as for its two neighboring vessels. Das hätte uns gerade noch gefehlt 🙁

Today I was once again a lesson on "Travel broadens the" learn. No sooner was the food served, I thought my eyes were not to be trusted: A garfish has green bones Y-. This was definitely not the wine, we treated ourselves to dinner. Something suspicious, I let myself but quick to convince delicious taste. Und grüne Gräten sind beim Zerlegen auch viel leichter zu finden 🙂

XKH_5374

Preparations for the final fireworks ran at full speed. Even at noon had secured a considerable number of large and small rafts in the middle of the river, which were covered with tarpaulins. On the shore is lined up chairs in all colors and forms, probably all, there was in Viana do Castelo at all :-). We had to be randomly landed very lucky at the bar waiting in the front row; behind us and the audience before the fireworks.

XKH_5370XKH_5317

Before darkness came on the river movement. Sailing yachts and motor boats left the harbor, full of young and old, on the way to the best anchorages. The stands behind us slowly began to fill.

Also we met the last preparations. For safety's sake, we placed a bucket of water on deck and attached seat cushions and drinks into the cockpit.

At twelve clock it then went off. More than 25 Minutes colorful images were drawn in the sky, starting from the middle of the river or the railway bridge. For us one of the most beautiful fireworks, we had seen so far. Unplanned we were again at the right time, right place. Life is just gorgeous!

XKH_5593

The next morning, slight hangover mood was announced. On land, most remnants of the Fiesta had already disappeared. We started early with water running off the road on to Porto. Without fog, but even without wind the day passed somehow gray in gray.

Only the arrival of the new "Douro Marina" did some light on this day. We were only three miles from the city center received royal. Two Marineros accompanied us to the berth and helped us when mooring (Although we would like mostly been happier alone. But they were only of the SUMMER from when they were of the opinion, now we could do both tourists nothing broken).

In the harbor office we got after completion of the usual paper war first a small, Portuguese Gastgeschenk (Delicious fish in garlic oil in the can), also:

  • the mandatory key for the web and the porcelain department,
  • a map of Porto. The special instructions, what would like best to visit, were added by hand by the Harbour Master
  • a list of possibilities, as the three kilometers to Porto are to lay most convenient back (Boot, Bus, Tram or even walking)
  • the address of the port cellars, with the marina has negotiated a special deal (no entry and delivery of the optionally purchased wine to the port)
  • a recommendation card for four lying on our way ports, the us there 20% Discount will contribute
  • the data for Internet access (there are actually three ways)
  • For directions to the nearest supermarket
  • A map to the best and second best restaurant in the vicinity
  • For directions to the boat service (Raymarine)

And finally you told us with, that morning, the rolls between eight and half past eight come as a gift of the house to the boat. What else can I say, since we are probably landed in paradise. Und Dank des Verhandlungsgeschicks von Martin von der GANESCHA ist das Paradies auch gar nicht so teuer 🙂

Welcome to Portugal

The Capitano today morning had ants in Popo. Even at a quarter past eight, So for me felt in the middle of the night, spread it (busy) Hustle and bustle. The SY Ganesha was already up and away. That was not at all times! So was the original plan, to go on after the radio round eleven clock anchor, not to think. At least I still got a chance for a decent breakfast. As even the Finn next to us got up the anchor, was finally no stopping.

So we were at ten clock on the trip to Viana do Castelo and completed the remaining preparations halt on the way. So we made the Parasailor tableware clear and after an hour and fell on, that we had the spark did not even activated. The absence of the winch crank, however, was already noticed when setting the first sail. There is nothing better than a lightning start in the morning.

XKH_4919

But at some point everything was so, as it should be and under the Parasailor we made good journey south. From Eckhardt of the SY LONI 3 we got over VHF radio the last advice for our way. Ganz prima, if you go ahead an explorer. So we already knew, that in Viana do Castelo, a big fiesta would expect us. The harbor was crowded, but the waiting dock would still places to get. In addition, the entrance was something choppy in the river and from about 16 Clock was with local winds to 30 Expected node. Since the Parasailor should be better back in the sack. What should go wrong? 🙂

XKH_4906

So the ride was completely relaxed. Not that here comes a false impression. I do not sleep all the time, wenn wir unterwegs sind 🙂 Auch wenn Dietmar das manchmal so erzählt.

Dietmar threw the Troll and short time later, the day was perfect. A garfish, Proud 85 Inches long, emigrated to supplement the on-board meal plan in our fridge. Unfortunately, I can not describe this worthy event as non-fishing, let alone evaluate. But since I have always loved to eat fish, I am looking forward to me previously unknown species. I will keep you posted, as the handsome guy has tasted.

XKH_4902

In order afterwards to be able to fully utilize the time ashore, I cooked our dinner before traveling. The time ashore is really a shame, to waste with such trivial things such as cooking. And if the sea conditions allow, one can also there doing the housework. This is all a matter of practice.

All predictions proved to be true. In the river entrance, we went because of the choppy lake prefer a slightly larger sheet and announced wind of well over 20 Node came at just the Docking at the bar waiting a bit inconvenient.

In the city bustling with activity. A huge costume parade reminded me almost a little bit of Mardi Gras. The atmosphere was great and we could drive us simply, tried here the delicious Farturos, there looked at the numerous stalls and could infect us by the Portuguese joy of life. This allowed Martin and Violetta not miss the SY Ganesha. The lay next to us at the dock and were not even on the go. Together we plunged back into the fray.

XKH_5000

XKH_5016

(Many more pictures are in the gallery of Viana do Castelo!!!)

After tasting various Portuguese wines we were all quite pretty groggy. But to 12 Clock fireworks at the old fortress was yet announced! We decided, briefly return to our SUMMER, to us to strengthen with the prepared dinner, to something better get back into shape. This decision, however, was clearly a mistake. Just five minutes after eating Dietmar was asleep blissfully. At first I thought still, no problem, I wake then afterwards. But eventually fell even my eyes to. So we heard the fireworks though, toasty snuggled up in our bunk, but we have seen nothing. Good, dass morgen Abend noch eines ist 🙂

Hasta la Vista Spain

XKH_4679

Only a stone's throw away from Vigo Baiona, directly to the Portuguese border. This city should be our last stop for the time being in Spain. Although already lay all day thick fog over the "Ria de Vigo", but in the afternoon the visibility was again elucidated so far, that we could make our way south.

XKH_4686

Finally, we had once again a strong wind and we laid all the way back under sail. Although we had to cross to the south wind, but it was still a pleasure. Only once before the target disappeared everything behind a white curtain of dense fog and we both stood vigilant outside in search of the small fishing boats and sailing yachts, who were traveling without AIS.

We had already set in Vigo, that we in Baiona not in the Marina, but wanted to go in the bay at anchor. Because on the Portuguese west coast, the anchorages are very rare and we wanted to again enjoy the peace. The Bay of Baiona loved it at first sight and we were at a safe distance from the lively beach at anchor. We spent the evening on board, because we both did not want, yet to make the dinghy clear. So we enjoyed a delicious dinner and a beautiful sunset. With the dark calm returned to the bay and we disappeared quite early to bed.

XKH_4747

The next morning, while the radio round, we note, that the LONI 3 had arrived in Baiona yesterday, but was in the Marina at the transit bridge. Eckhardt and Ilona but wanted today continue to "Viana do Castelo" in Portugal. We sparked a bit back and forth, still got a super good restaurant tip for the evening and the latest weather information. Then we got ready for the shore excursion. As heard in front of the bow a foghorn. Eckhardt it did not take, but again personally to look over at us. We were very pleased, the two again to see in person and agreed to meet in Porto for dinner.

I got today again a dinghy driving lesson. Today, the start was a "cold" motor on the training plan. First open tank vent, Engine key purely, Choke raus, give some gas and then pull the starter cord with growing enthusiasm ... unsuccessfully ... then push in choke, enter and draw more gas, Pull, ziehen….endlich 😉 Zwischendurch musste ich noch dem Skipper auf die Finger hauen, as to what the rumzog and there still which turned. As a passenger, it is really a catastrophe.

So we chugged towards Marina, moored there our dinghy and went ashore. As always, Dietmar was not so easy without the business to enter and walk past the local chandlery. But this time he had really a concern: Our radar, several times by tested and inspected personally, got out yesterday in the fog again. Actually clear, yes two days ago we had only the Raymarine Service on board. As the next section for fast emerging coastal fog is known, but we did not waive these important safety factor. Unfortunately, we had forgotten, that today was Friday. Nothing would happen before Monday here and it would probably take three days again, where appropriate, provide replacement parts. It was nice, but as long as we did not want to remain. So we moved the repair to Porto, about our next destination. There we have planned anyway a longer stop.

So we strolled through the old town and were on their way home, wie so oft, not resist inviting tapas bar. Good saturated we made after siesta on board our SUMMER.

In the afternoon the SY Ganesha walked beside us anchor. So we meet again. We chat a bit with the two and exchanged the latest news from. Then we headed back on the road on land at the recommended restaurant, for there to feast royally.

When we got served our seafood platter, We were really impressed. But also a little intimidated, when we saw the tools provided. The could have also good to use for a heart transplant. Armed with pliers and a strangely shaped type fork we moved the plate valiantly to body. Somewhat tedious and laborious indeed, aber ein echter Hochgenuss 🙂
